Newborn
Every newborn session is a documentation of a miracle. Jacki G. photography captures both portraiture and lifestyle during your session. The best time to book a session is during the first two weeks of life, while your little one is still very sleepy and pose able. I have photographed older babies so if you missed the deadline don't worry.
Newborn Session Information
This is such a special time for you and your family--the addition of a new, sweet baby. I want to help you savor those memories of your sweet, little one.
When to Schedule:
Newborn sessions are best in the first two weeks of your baby’s birth. During this time, your baby still sleeps a lot and his or her complexion is clear. When you call to schedule your appointment, your session will be reserved for an approximate time frame. Notify me as soon as possible when your baby is born to set a firm date.
Before the Session:
Relax!! I have three children, so am very familiar with the stress, fatigue, and emotions those first days home with baby may bring. Please, don’t worry about having a perfect house. I just need a little space and am more than happy to move a few things around if needed (and move them back). I bring the studio to you so there is no need to worry about lighting.
What to Expect at Your Baby’s Session:
IN STUDIO sessions take place at my home studio. The studio is cleaned and sanitized after each session. All you have to bring is food for baby * breast or bottle* diapers and a pacifier if they use one. Relax and let me do my magic.
If you choose an IN HOME NEWBORN SESSION I will arrive at your home approximately 10 minutes before the scheduled time of your session. This gives me time to set up equipment and props without taking time away from your session. I will provide you with a information sheet once you booked your session on how to prepare for the newborn session.
Baby’s session can include any combination of the following: baby only, siblings and baby, parents and baby, family and baby. Baby calls the shots! Babies are little people, individuals with their own likes, dislikes and personality. If baby wants to eat, we’ll take a break. If baby wants to swaddle, we’ll swaddle him/her. I’ll work with you and your baby to have a successful session.
The Petite Newborn session is just BABY ONLY and our goal is to produce 1-5 very good images. The Deluxe Newborn session is more relaxed and a better variety of images to choose from.
Please check out the pricing section for more details.
Maternity
A portrait session with Jacki G. Photography is the perfect way to remember those miraculous details of your pregnancy. An expectant mother is one of the most beautiful subjects to photograph. Perhaps it’s the glow you have about you, the excitement, the anticipation, and the joy. The newness of life. Maternity sessions are best booked between 29-35 weeks pregnant. Maternity photography is available as an add on to your booked newborn or milestone session at a discounted rate. If you book a Maternity session ONLY the price is different. Maternity sessions can take place in my home studio or on location. A deposit is required to hold your spot.
What to wear- We want to show off that baby belly so something more fitted to your shape works perfectly. A fitted dress is also nice. I like more natural tones then bright colors. Check out Pinterest for inspiration on what to wear. Please avoid large logos, tennis shoes, baggy clothes. I would also avoid bright neon colors.
Birth Photography
Why hire a birth photographer?
The photos from your labor and delivery will serve as a beautiful reminder of one of the most important days of your life. Allowing The Birth Photographer to handle this very important task will not only free up Dad or your other support person to be more available to you during your labor and delivery, but it will also ensure that his or her participation is captured on film. Dad won’t have to worry about taking photos, so he’ll be better able to enjoy the moment right along with you. He can be a more active participant. It’s definitely a day worthy of documenting.
About The Birth Photographer
I am a mother, sister, daughter, wife, housekeeper, cook, friend, photographer, and doula, just to start. I love being creative. Photographs have always been very important to me. It’s rare to see me without a camera, especially at any family events. I want to capture those moments that we share, and keep them forever. It just seemed natural to want to capture the moments of others, so they can share them with their families as well. I prefer to use natural light whenever possible, but sometimes help from a flash is just what is needed. I am located in Richmond, VA, but will travel 30 miles outside of Richmond . Please feel free to contact me anytime with questions or to book your session.
The consultation
When you contact The Birth Photographer, we will set up a consultation to discuss what you should expect, what you would like to have photographed, and any other questions you may have. At the consultation, a $800.. deposit is required to secure your tentative session. Payment plans can be arranged. This deposit is non-refundable unless Jacki or her backup photographer cannot make it to your birth for some reason. The remainder of the fee is due by 38 wks pregnant.
About birth photography
Birth is very unpredictable, and the lighting is never ideal. These are not portraits. Jacki photographs births in a photo journalistic style and prefers to use black and white images for your slideshow. The black and white images better reflect the mood of the event, and they help to tone down the graphic nature of birth.
Labor and Delivery
You’re Labor and Delivery session fee includes Jacki’s time and talent, You will receive a thumb drive of up to 100+ full resolution images from your birth (both color and black and white). Two – Three images via email sent with in 24hrs.
The cost is $1600. The $800. deposit is applied towards your balance, so $800. Is due by week 38 of your pregnancy. The images will not be released until payment is made in full. Jacki will arrive at your birth once you are fairly certain you are in labor, and she will stay for about an hour or two after the birth of your baby.
Additional products may be available, such as prints and bound books with images from your birth. Please contact Jacki G. for details

A Cake Smash session :
I am sure you can't believe your little one is about to turn 1 year old!
That first year passes so quickly and I am so excited to document such a momentous occasion!
I typically do individual pictures first, then smash pictures. (They get pretty messy!)
Cake smash sessions can be in my home studio OR at an outdoor location of your choice. (weather permitting)
THEMES AND COLORS ~ I love a good theme, but prefer to keep it minimal. For me as an artist, it is more important to see your baby, rather than the decorations. A small banner or garland works perfectly. Etsy is a great place to find these props. If there is a theme you prefer, please let me know in advance, so I can do what I can to accommodate. Choosing colors for a cake smash can be tough. I suggest choosing colors that match home or nursery decor. Pinterest is a great resource for color schemes.
THE OUTFIT ~ We will begin your baby’s session with a few non-cake smashing poses. I have a limited supply of outfits for older babies in the studio. You are more than welcome to use them for these portraits, but may want to bring a few things of your own. Boys look great in blue jeans paired with suspenders or a tie. Or, a pair of leggings, a onesie, and a cute hat will do the trick. For girls, ruffle bums, leggings, and tutus are always perfect. Rompers are pretty spectacular as well.
THE CAKE ~ The cake is a very important part of the session. Please make sure you have a proper smash cake for photographing. Giant cupcakes or small tiered cakes photograph best. Also, it is important to remember that baby will be smashing the cake into a thousand pieces. I recommend a simple yellow cake, or chocolate if it is cohesive with the colors chosen for decorations. Fondant is pretty, but it is not easy to eat with your fingers. A classic buttercream frosting is best. If you refrigerate the cake before the session, please allow plenty of time for the cake to soften and warm to room temperature.
THE MESS ~ Giving a cake to a baby does create a mess. I will gladly allow your little one to take a dip in my bathtub after the session. If we are doing the session outdoors, please bring LOTS of wipes. Be sure to bring a change of clothes, too.
NAP TIME ~ Please be sure to schedule your cake smash around your baby’s nap time. Rested babies are happy babies!
